I've done all that -- relocated to something else. And, TstLoops is initiated correctly if I change the name of application.cfm to AnnApp.cfm and invoke that directly, instead of indirectly through CF, as I mentioned above. And, if application.cfm is not there or is blank, TstLoops works fine on it's own.

I really think this is a configuration issue or a permissions issue. I just don't know what.

RE: System Configuration Problem

I can run TestLoops.cfm directly with no problem. I can run it through AnnApp.cfm if I call AnnApp.cfm directly.

No, this is not the only line of code, I only said I commented that line out. It sets several session variables and then has the below if statement. For testing purposes, I had changed the login.cfm to my TestLoops.cfm, because I knew TestLoops.cfm works. :-) So, it's checking to see if the user login has expired and if so AND if the script that was actually invoked is NOT login.cfm, then go to login.cfm to force the user to login.

<cfif Not Session.LoggedIn>
	<cfif (CGI.SCRIPT_NAME IS NOT "/login.cfm") AND (CGI.SCRIPT_NAME IS NOT "/login_result.cfm")>
		<cflocation url="login.cfm" addtoken="no">

Great. So now you need to remove that line from Application.cfm, and run TstLoops.cfm directly to see what happens.

And, do you really want a <cflocation> in there? If that is the only code in Application.cfm, you are basically sending every request, no matter what it is, to that one redirected page.

RE: System Configuration Problem

Yes, I am calling it with an http:// url. I have determined that this line of ocde is the suspect:

		<cflocation url="TstLoops.cfm" addtoken="no">

If I comment that out, it all works fine. If I rename the application.cfm to Annapplication.cfm and call that directly with http://localhost/ows/Annapplication.cfm it works fine with that line of code uncommented. That line of code is only a problem when ColdFusion automatically invokes application.cfm

And, this is part of a very large application that has been working and is working on other servers. I'm just trying to get it functioning on my desktop so that I can make modifications to it. I suspect it's something to do with permissions but I'm not sure what and how to resolve it. Any help or pointing me in the right direction to get some help is greatly appreciated.

However, if I add an application.cfm or application.cfc file, it fails. If I change the name of the application.cfm and invoke it directly, it works fine. I suspect this has to be something with permissions in Active Directory or something. Permissions of

MySQL specifics - 2nd Edition book

While it doesn't seem to make a difference according to the documentation, I'm now using the following with the 2nd edition of the book:
MySQL: 5.5.22
OS: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Apache: 2.2.22 (Ubuntu)
phpMyAdmin: 3.4.10.1-1
-----------------------------------------------------

Everything from my last post to the section below worked fine.

On page 142 (Lesson 17), specifying a default value for a column of the DATETIME type doesn't work, unless you put in a static value (which will never change and doesn't meet our needs for the purpose of this table). You can see the section "[link=http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/data-type-defaults.html]11.1.4. Data Type Default Values[/link]" in the MySQL documentation for an explanation of this. If you want to enter the current date and time, you'll have to do it in your INSERT statement, as you're adding data to the table.

On page 153 (Lesson 18), your code for MySQL needs to look like this:

[code]
     SELECT cust_name, cust_address AS cust_address1, CONCAT(RTRIM(cust_city), ', ', RTRIM(cust_state), ' ', RTRIM(cust_zip)) AS cust_address2, cust_country AS cust_address3 FROM Customers;
[/code]
and because of this, the view is constructed like this:

[code]
     CREATE VIEW CustomerMailingLabels AS SELECT cust_name, cust_address AS cust_address1, CONCAT(RTRIM(cust_city), ', ', RTRIM(cust_state), ' ', RTRIM(cust_zip)) AS cust_address2, cust_country AS cust_address3 FROM Customers;
[/code]

The text at the bottom of page 154 (Lesson 18) tells us to drop the previously created view. While the book doesn't give syntax for this, I can only assume that Ben wanted us to figure this out on our own. If we can't do that, we'll have lots of trouble when working with SQL in the real world. For those in a hurry or the very lazy, here's the code:
[code]
     DROP VIEW CustomerMailingLabels;
[/code]

Here are the adjustments for MySQL for the code on the top of page 155 (Lesson 18):
[code]
     CREATE VIEW CustomerMailingLabels AS SELECT cust_name, cust_address AS cust_address1, CONCAT(RTRIM(cust_city), ', ', RTRIM(cust_state), ' ', RTRIM(cust_zip)) AS cust_address2, cust_country AS cust_address3 FROM Customers WHERE NOT cust_address IS NULL AND NOT cust_city IS NULL AND NOT cust_state IS NULL AND NOT cust_zip IS NULL AND NOT cust_country IS NULL;
[/code]

Your reply is a bit confusing and covers multiple different things. I'll try my best to respond.

First, "you mean this is legal..." - no, I didn't say that. If you want to set Applicaition vars in Application.cfc, you want to make use of onApplicationStart. Please see the WACK or relevant CF docs for examples.

You then asked about case sensitivity. Yes, Linux/OSX is case sensitive. But it only applies to file names. Your code should be fine.

Actually - and sorry to disagree with you Ben - but you can do an Application.cfc without any methods at all. For example, you could just give it a name and that's it. It makes your App.cfc kinda worthless, but it is valid. Later on when you decide you need to do something more, like run so and so on Application startup, you can add the method.

Application.cfc has a very specific format, and needs methods defined. Application.cfm is free-form, basically whatever you can use in an included file, so you can just use <cfset> tags to set a couple of variables if you'd like.

You are referring to an Application variable that does not exist. You need to make sure that you are indeed setting ti, and that your code is actually using the same Application.cfc or Application.cfm.
